Second Alarm Mansfield

Mansfield- Residents along Bungay lake in North Attleboro and Mansfield were awakened this morning to the smell of smoke and something burning. North Attleboro Police and Fire and Mansfield Fire were called to the scene to investigate. Upon arrival a second alarm was struck by North Attleboro for a fully involved two story wood frame structure on an Island about 200 to 300 yards off shore. Off duty North Attleboro fire Lt Flynn as well as other residents utilized there boats to assist firefighters to the Island with equipment and hose lines. The large house was believed to be vacant, there were other structures on the island however they were not involved. Mansfield, North Attleboro, Plainville, and Foxboro were all on scene. A supply line was stretched from shore, off of Lakeview Ave Mansfield, to the island and several portable pumps were used on the island to supply water. Attleboro Police 4th of July Fireworks Press Release

ATTLEBORO- Attleboro Polce Chief Richard Pierce has issued the following press release regarding Friday night's fireworks display at Hayward Field.

The Fourth of July Fireworks Display will be held at Hayward Field off North Avenue on Friday July 4, 2008 at 9:00 PM.   The rain date will be Sunday July 13, 2008.

The general public will not be allowed on the baseball or football field areas of Hayward Field per order of Fire Chief Churchill during the fireworks display.

The General Public will not be allowed to park in the Hayward Field parking area near the baseball field.

Vehicles will not be allowed to park along the street on North Avenue from 3:00 PM until 12:00 Midnight on July 4th

The Police Command Post will be located in the Spatcher Pool parking lot off North Avenue near the entrance to Hayward Field.  A First Aid Station and "lost and found" area will be located next to the Police Command Post.

Parking will be available at the following locations:

      1.  Northwest Industrial Complex, Walton Street across from Hayward Field.

      2.  Parking lot area at #81 West St.

      3.  Tri-Boro Plaza parking lots, Toner Blvd., North Attleboro.

      4.  Handicap Parking will be available at the Walton Lonsbury Co. parking lot on

           North Avenue, across from Hayward Field.

      5.  Limited parking will be available at Bishop Feehan High School.                                                    

At the conclusion of the Fireworks Display and when the pedestrians have cleared the street along North Avenue, all vehicles will exit the Northwest Industrial Complex on Walton Street in two lanes. One lane will be routed in a northerly direction on North Avenue and the other lane will be routed in a southerly direction on North Avenue.  A delay in traffic movement is to be expected as no traffic will be allowed onto North Avenue until the pedestrians have cleared the street.

Vehicles parked along side streets north of Hayward Field will be routed in a northerly direction on North Avenue towards Toner Boulevard.

Vehicles parked along side streets south of Hayward Field will be routed in a southerly direction on North Avenue towards West Street.

Vehicles parked along Stobbs Drive, will be routed onto Holcott Drive and onto Commonwealth Avenue toward North Main Street.

Vehicles parked in the parking lot at # 81 West Street will be routed in a westerly direction on West Street.

Tractor Trailer Rollover in Mansfield

MANSFIELD- A tractor trailer loaded with lumber rolled over on the on ramp to Route 495 from Route 140 just after noon today. Mansfield firefighters worked for over an hour to free the heavily trapped driver of the tractor trailer.

A Medflight helicopter was called to the scene to transport the driver, who was freed using hydraulic cutting tools and the help of a heavy duty wrecker, to a Boston area hospital. Traffic was expected to be tied up in the area for the rest of the afternoon and rush hour. Pictures by Ray Taylor.

2 Alarm Fire Burns Barn in Rehoboth

REHOBOTH- A fire in a barn behind a single family house in Rehoboth burnt to the ground late this afternoon. The exact cause is not known, although early reports were that a car stored in the garage section of the barn may have caught fire. Rehoboth Fire officials were also investigating a report of a lightning strike at the home earlier in the afternoon.

Fire Chief Robert Pray struck 2 alarms bringing in extra apparatus and manpower from  surrounding communities, including Swansea. The fire was under control within 45 minutes and the nearby home was saved. Pictures from the scene below.

Severe Thunderstorms Pound the Attleboro Area

ATTLEBORO- A line of strong storms ferociously blew though the Attleboro area Tuesday afternoon. The storm damage started in Seekonk, where a house on Scott Road was stuck by lightning, and continued through Attleboro where streets were flooded and alarms were numerous.

The Attleboro Fire Department responded to over a dozen calls in a 2 hour period starting at 2:00pm and ending at 4:00pm. By that time the storm had passed and most of the damage was over. Attleboro Police responded to many call for flooded roadways with cars stuck. The worst were Forest Street at the railroad bridge, O'Neil Boulevard and Peck Street. Also Newport Avenue from Cumberland Avenue to Continental Drive was barely passsable.

Police Search for Mugging Suspect

ATTLEBORO- A worker at Sturdy Hospital was mugged during his lunch break on Thursday afternoon around 12:30pm. The victim was robbed of his wallet and some cash after being knocked to the ground by the assailant. He suffered injuries to his head and shoulders from being struck by an object during the robbery. The assault and robbery took place in the parking lot between Dunham and Pearl Streets.

Attleboro Police are asking the public for help in identifying a dark complected white or Hispanic male subject approximately 25-35 years of age. He was seen wearing a black baseball cap with a large bill,white T-shirt  and blue jeans. He fled the area towards Pearl Street.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Officer Michael MacNeil or the Attleboro Police Department at 508-222-1212. Attleboro Police have released a sketch photo of the suspect below.

Firefighters Visit Project Success Class

ATTLEBORO- The crews from Attleboro Fire Department's B platoon, Engine 1 and Ladder 1, paid a special visit to the Project Success classroom at Thacher School this afternoon. The firefighters gave the children a tour of their trucks and equipment and the students got to sit inside a real fire engine.

The afternoon visit was as fun for firefighters as it was for the teachers and children. A group photo was taken at the end. That photo and additional pictures from the visit can be seen below.

Chimney Fire Extends to House in Mansfield

MANSFIELD- Mansfield firefighters were called to 220 Mill St. shortly after 8:00 PM for a reported chimney fire. First arriving firefighters found heavy smoke pushing from the eaves. The fire extended into the walls and part of the roof. Overhaul and salvage efforts lasted for over three hours.

Three hose lines were stretched and the Tower Ladder opened the roof. Mutual aid responding to the scene was a Foxboro Engine while North Attleboro covered the North Main Street Station. Story and photos by Matt Pillsbury.

Fire Guts Rear Porch of Home

ATTLEBORO- Firefighters responded to a fire at 17 Andover Avenue, in South Attleboro section of the City, Sunday afternoon. The fire originated on an attached screen porch and appears to have been accidental. Fire crews had the fire knocked down in 10 minutes and there was only smoke damage to the rest of the house.

Pedestrian Struck in Norton

NORTON- A pedestrian was stuck by a motor vehicle around 12:00pm today, suffering serious injuries in the crash. The victim was initially en route by Norton Rescue to Rhode Island Hospital Trauma Center but instead went to Sturdy Hospital in Attleboro for stabilization due to airway problems.

The accident occurred in front of 130 Burt Street which is off of Rt 123 and Plain Street in the North end of town. ACN will bring you more details as they become available.

UPDATE: The female victim, who was critically injured, died several hours later after arriving at Rhode Island Hospital. The driver has not been charged, as of yet, by Norton police who are investigating the accident.
